My pottery story...

Even as a kid, I was interested in learning to throw pottery. I can remember being about 11 years old wanting to try it. So for that Christmas my parents gave me one of those toy potter's wheels. That was 1982. I remember trying it twice. I made two little vessels that I still have but they are very fragile as they were not fired. I was still interested in high school so I signed up for art classes. I asked to use the wheel and was denied! About a decade later and living in Indianapolis, I found out about the Indianapolis Art Center and decided to take my first class in the Summer of 1997. I really enjoyed it but didn't continue classes at that time even though I had planned to. I took another class at Herron School of Art through IUPUI in 2000. In 2005, I took 2 classes again at Indianapolis Art Center. During that time I got pregnant and knew I probably wouldn't be back for a few years while I adjusted to motherhood. I returned to open studio in Fall of 2010 and took my most recent class in Spring 2011. I really enjoy the feeling of the clay in my hands and I especially enjoy holding the finished product and exclaiming "I made this!"

I prefer to make functional wheel-thrown pieces but I also experiment with hand and slab building.
